Crazy Clues

Goal: Give the best clue you can under a silly twist rule and guess the secret word before anyone else does.

How to Play

  1. One player becomes the Clue-Giver.
  2. The AI generates a secret word.
  3. The Clue-Giver must describe the secret word without saying the word or any part of the word (Ex: if the word is pancake, then the clue giver cannot say “pan” or “cake” so they might say “you make thing on stove, with syrup…”)
  4. All other players guess freely.
  5. The first player who says the correct word earns +1 point.
  6. The Clue-Giver also earns +1 point for leading anyone at the table to the right answer.
  7. If the Clue-Giver breaks a rule (such as using a part of the word), the table may call “NOPE!” and the Clue-Giver receives –1 point.
  8. Rotate Clue-Giver each round.
  9. Play continues for as long as the group wants.

Core Restrictions

  • You may not say the secret word.
  • You may not say any part of the secret word
(e.g., “volcano” → cannot say “vol,” “cano,” etc.).
  • You may not use direct rhymes (e.g., “balcanno” or “polcano”).
  • You may describe concepts, effects, sounds, actions, or associations.

Recommended Rule: Add a Twist

Before each round, choose a Mode.
Modes define how the Clue-Giver must speak.

You can use one Mode for the whole game or change Modes each round.

Modes

(all example clues for Volcano)

Classic Mode

Clue-Giver speaks normally, following only the core restrictions.

Caveman Mode

One-syllable words only. (“big rock make boom”)
Simple caveman-style speech encouraged.

Deep Caveman Mode

One-syllable nouns and verbs only. (“rock make boom”)
No adjectives, no adverbs, no filler words.

Medieval Mode

Sentences must place the noun before the verb. (This rock hath erupted in the year 79 Alto Dominum)
You may also require old english if you wish (the table decides if something is too modern by majority rules. ).

Opposite Mode

Clue-Giver must describe the opposite of the word’s meaning.

Historical Mode

Clue-Giver may not reference things past a certain date, or should try to talk like they’re existing in a certain time period.

Foreign Language Mode

Clue-Giver must describe the word in the chosen language (e.g., Spanish-only).
Still may not say the word or any part of it in any language.

Gesture Mode

Players may use gestures, miming, and one-syllable sounds, but no full words.

Robot Mode

Clues must be delivered in clipped, mechanical phrases (“Rock. Hot. Boom.”).

Storyteller Mode

Clue-Giver must use a short narrative style to describe the idea.

Three-Word Limit

Clue-Giver may use no more than three words per clue.

Silent Start

Clue-Giver begins with gestures only; after 10 seconds they may speak.

Scoring Summary

  • Correct Guesser: +1
  • Clue-Giver on correct guess: +1
  • Rule violation (NOPE): –1 (Clue-Giver only)

End the game at a target score, or simply play until the group is ready to end.
